The ITR-V acknowledgement you download from the income-tax e-filing portal is password protected. The password is commonly your PAN in small letters followed by your date of birth written as DDMMYYYY — abcde1234f01011990 for PAN ABCDE1234F born on 1 January 1990. Form 16 is different: your employer issues it, and the password is whatever they chose. How it works

ITR-V: PAN in small letters + date of birth as DDMMYYYY, with no spaces or slashes.
For a firm, company or trust, use the date of incorporation or formation instead of a date of birth.
Form 16: the password is set by the employer — check the email it came with or ask HR. It is often based on PAN, but not always.
Formats on government portals can change; if the rule above fails, the download page or email states the current one.
Only unlock your own tax documents, or a client's that were shared with you.

Why doing this in your browser matters

Your employer sets it. It is usually mentioned in the email with the Form 16; if not, HR or payroll can tell you.

Do I still need to verify my return?

Yes. Unlocking the acknowledgement does not verify or file anything. Follow the e-filing portal's verification steps.

Is this connected to the income-tax portal?
